Friday Five: Hello Yellow

As I mentioned, we painted our dining room last weekend. Yay! That now leaves only 3 rooms that are still yellow.

When we moved in, every wall AND CEILING was painted this hazy shade of springtime. We’re making our way, slowly but surely. But to prove that yellow can be an awesome decorating color, the Friday Five this week features some awesome uses of the sunshine shade.

1. Yellow and White

I mean, what an amazing space. I love the one awesome range and the giant artwork. The wooden table really warms it up and makes a modern space so homey. It’s yellow and white done right, without making it seem like a 70s bridesmaid’s dress.

2. Yellow and Navy

.

The lucky baby of J.Crew Creative Director Jenna Lyons gets to live here. I love the playful circus tent stripes on the walls and the dark wall. It’s great how the dresser blends in so you just get the overall effect vs. a piece of furniture jumping out at you. Makes you focus on the star of the room, the ceiling. Okay, and maybe the baby.

3. Pop of Yellow

A little dab will do ya. This really traditional setting is moderned-up with the cool, bright kids chair. I also adore the framed display of kid art. What a great way to make your little Picasso’s art look like actual Picasso. I read somewhere that every room should have something orange in it. I think the same could be said for yellow, if it’s done like this.

4. Yellow and Green

Another color combo I typically think of as 70s. I picture those braided ribbon barrettes, don’t you? But this is done so well with the white grounding the bed and lamp. (The lamp!) The goldenrod yellow here is just the right shade. Lemony-er would have been too twee.

5. Yellow and Blue

My first decorating decision was to buy blue and yellow decor for the kitchen in my first apartment. I went with more the traditional French provincial cornflower blue and yellow. It’s a little tired in my opinion, but this paler yellow with a cloudy blue makes it fresh–nay, fraiche–once again.

What are your thoughts on yellow? Only for gender-neutral babies? Or do you give it a gold star?

    Love the kitchen. Like, whoa.

But you know when yellow sucks most of all? When it’s Big Bird.

I give it the BIGGEST gold star I can. I think it is a terrific color to decorate with.
