Ombre Flower Arrangement

The ombre trend is pretty much everywhere these days.

{Call Me Cupcake}

Side note: Taylor and I once worked on an ad campaign for a Mexican fast food joint (not that one) and came up with this spokesman called the Hambre Hombre. Like a Johnny Cash-Man in Black cowboy who steals your tacos because he’s hungry (hambre). We were thoroughly amused. Then the client fired us. I see no connection.

Anyhoosit, Sunday being my birthday and all, we had a few friends over for dinner Saturday night and I bought myself some flowers. Carnations. (Who else has Sex and the City flashbacks whenever this flower comes up? Miranda’s Mom’s funeral? Berger and the Post-it?)

Publix had some slim pickings on the monochromatic look, which is what I usually go for, so when I saw the pink-tipped peach carnations, I thought I’d give the ombre trend a shot myself.

I started with a large (10″ square) glass vase.

Then, I grabbed a roll of scotch tape and taped a grid pattern along the top of the vase. I originally went over the top and onto the sides, but then I realized the sides would be visible, so I trimmed the tape off the side. I’m sure floral tape would have been more effective, but that seems too complicated, doesn’t it? I thought this would maybe be too thick, but it didn’t seem to make a difference.

Then—very technical, so pay attention—I put the flowers in the holes from lightest shade to darkest shade.

And…Viola! [sic]

Turn to the right!

Sashay, Shante.

Oooh. And there was the cake I mentioned on Friday.

It’s okay to have three pieces in one day, right?

    If you didn’t have AT LEAST three pieces of cake I’d be pissed. Happy birthday, my dear! I hope it was as fabulous as that flower arrangement.

    You always have such beautiful flower arrangements! Love fresh flowers.
    The scotch tape, vs the floral tape, is a great idea – doesn’t show as much.
    Of course, you may have 3 pieces of cake. It’s your birthday!

    I echo Elaine – great idea with the tape! As for pink carnations, they were (are?) my sorority flower (?) so I used that to justify the reason we used a bunch at our wedding. Also? They were $2 per instead of $8 per for roses. Win win. So there, York-MacDougal-Goldenblatt.
