Feeling Vignette-y

On Sunday I embarked on a full on photo shoot for the Sea family. More on that coming soon, but when I got home I still had the styling bug and went to town on a neglected bookcase in our living room. I’d show you a Before picture, but I don’t think I’ve ever taken any—it was that blah.

The shelf itself (itshelf?) was an old bookcase I once crammed into my Dodge Neon from the blessed Williams-Sonoma/Pottery Barn outlet in Memphis. When we painted the room Martha Stewart’s Whetstone Gray, we also painted the bookcase to blend in. I also had to sweet talk Taylor into letting me hang the Charles Rennie Mackintosh print I’ve had for ages.  Here it is now with a little zhuzhing.

I had originally thought about putting a pair of lamps on this book case—specifically these lamps—but the sofa’s endtable is within like 2 feet and it just seemed too close to yet another pair of lamps. So, I put these white pillar candleholders from Ikea with unscented Target pillars on either end to serve as mini-lamps.

Then I added the jade foo dogs my Mom let me pilfer from her on my last visit to Florida. A mantel clock that no longer works—I need to get it fixed. The picture was hung a bit too high and the bookcase is a bit too low, so I wanted to add some height. I stacked our Saveur magazine collection on there and plopped a big ol’ plant on top of it. This plant goes from death’s door to marathon champion about every 3 weeks. I filled in the background with a big leaf that I bought for Leeroy Jenkins’ vase buddy. And in the front I added a pretty silver frame that was a wedding gift. Inside is a picture of the Seine. I think a lighter, airier photo would probably be a better fit.

I created a rough little runner out of some leftover roman shade and lamp shade fabric.

And just to prove that we do read books, here is a shot of what’s below. Color-coded, at that!

Do you ever get on styling tears like I did? Have we read some of the same books? Any favorites?

We’ve read many of the same books. Klosterman, Hornsby, The Book Thief, and more. But I was so happy to see The Tender Bar! What a wonderful story. I hope you enjoyed it as much as I did.

We have a shockingly eerie taste in books. Seriously, I should take a picture of my bookshelf and send it to you- several of the same titles, color coded of course!
