All Boy
I’ve kind of been itching to rearrange something. So when this china cabinet came into my life and displaced my color-coded bookcase, I hatched a plan.
See, our third bedroom is a combo of office and boys’ room. However, other than the fact that there’s a stapler in there, no officing actually takes place. So I moved the desk out, moved the bookcase in and broke up my trundle bed “sectional” for two single beds.
Remember this lamp? I covered the shade of its twin sister, but never got around to doing this one. Hooray procrastination! Because the green shade works perfectly in here. And I still love the artichoke base.
So does the robot.
The bookcase totally works in here. It’s like it wandered onto the island of misfit toys and found a new home.
It took us a bit to land on a color scheme in here. Originally, it was yellow and gray. Then I put some bright art in there and the green started to come out. So I threw in the campaign nightstands, some orangey-red accents and the sophisticated yellow and gray scheme was officially out the window. But that’s okay with me. I like where we ended up. It’s a cheery space now. All boy, no office. (And no Lilly Pulitzer quilt either…)
I love the Sally Draper quote on the coaster, “I follow the rules and everybody hates me.” Poor thing. Sidebar: 4 weeks until Mad Men!
I briefly mentioned Taylor’s basement art studio in this post, but he’s been cranking down there coming up with some really cool stuff. (I should preface this with I know nothing about making art.) He’s been creating all these mini-paintings to cut down and collage in order to make these big paintings, which he’s been doing on salvaged doors. Here’s the first completed one. The colors were perfect for this room. The plan is to hang it, but for now it’s just leaning.
A closer look:
I find myself walking in there and just smiling at all the color, especially when the sun streams through the (ahem) paper shades.

Wowza, I love that colorful door. Very cool!
Thanks! I will pass your compliments along to the artist…
Yes. Thank you, Stephie! I like “Wowzas.” They are good to hear.
omg – I want that painting! Can you imagine those colors in my family room?!
That is one of the best he has done! (except my all time favorite in your living room!)
The boys will love the room – what a cool idea!!
You and Taylor are amazingly creative!!!!!!!
I am green with envy (pun intended) every time I see those campaign night stands!
Where’s the bookcase from? Looking for something low for Will’s room.
Thanks, Meghan. The bookcase is from the Pottery Barn outlet 100 years ago. We painted it light gray. Not a lot of help… sorry.
I *love* this room! I love the Zombie print, I love Taylor’s artwork, and I love the Pacman pillow. The whole thing makes me not dread redo-ing my boys’ room soon. I’ve been unwilling to part with the babyish scheme that they are really getting too big for.
Thank, Margaret Ann! It’s probably going to wear out its usefulness as the boys are almost 12. But with a Playstation and a TV in there, they’re not complaining!
Love the color palette and all the small details. I’ve got a 14 year old boy and we’ve been putting his little-boy things away the past two weeks or so. Makes me a little sad to see all those Papo figurines tucked away in the closet, but it’s cool to see his space becoming streamlined like this one. Thanks for the inspiration.
Oh, and congrats on the Homies nod! Gave you a vote, for sure
Thanks, Rita! You did an amazing job with your son’s desk! And I appreciate the vote.
I love all the retro toys in there. It’s not screaming at you that it’s a boys room. Just gives a gentle wink
Thank you! I’m sure if the boys were here full-time there would be many more legos.
I know! I think we have to move just so we can acquire some stairs!
Love the art in the room. Especially the door piece. Also, those pillows and the zombie print are pretty fantastic.
Thank you, Kelly!
Any chance you can share the source of the twin beds? They look perfect for my son’s room too.
Thanks, Sarah! Unfortunately, I bought the beds off of Craigslist.
This one on Amazon is similar in its simplicity. http://www.amazon.com/Trundle-Beds-Duralink-Twin-Frames/dp/B000AOMA90/ref=sr_1_32?ie=UTF8&qid=1333484722&sr=8-32
I will keep up my Craigslist scanning then too. Thanks so much and beautiful room.
Wow! I love how colourful it is! And it’s not too cluttered either, but the room still looks ‘complete’ if that makes sense. The art piece is amazing too!
Do you know where I could get a pacman pillow and robot like the ones you’ve used? I would love to get them for my nephew hehe.
Thank you! We got the pillows at a store called Homegrown in Decatur, GA. Taylor had the tin robot, so not sure where that came from, but I googled Tin Robot and came up with a few options.
