Inspired By Pantone
My friend and painting idol, Kristen Davis, invited me to a focus group about the new paint line, MyColor Inspired by Pantone. (Yes, kind of a mouthful.)
This was the first time I’ve been on this side of the one-way glass, but I’m happy to inform all you advertising folks that there were still M&Ms (hidden within trail mix).
So, a week or so before the group got together, I got a special delivery in the mail.
We were asked to use the paint. Don’t have to tell me twice! I boogied up to Goodwill where this Heritage chair was just sitting there, waiting for me and my five dollars.
There were actually two of them, but the cane was broken on the second one, so I left it behind for someone else to attend to.
I decided to paint the chair using the gray MyColor paint (not pictured above), called Griffin. I wanted to paint the cane white, so I sprayed it first.
Then I painted the chair with the gray paint and a brush. The latex paint is paint and primer in one, so I went against my nature and did not prime it (beyond what the spray paint already coated). The paint is much thicker than what I’m used to, and it took a little practice to make sure I wasn’t globbing too much paint on. But after three coats, it was pretty well coated and the Eggshell finish of the paint is very smooth. It’s also very low VOC paint, so there was no noticeable smell.
I had the cushion reupholstered with leftover white fabric from the DIY roman shades and some lime green cotton I picked up for the piping. It looked awesome, but next to the bright white cane? Not so awesome.
Well? Poo. So approximately 20 hours before the focus group, I decide to paint the cane webbing with the Griffin gray paint. I used a foam roller and a small foam brush. I tried to keep it light. But patience and time were not on my side.
After I did the best that I could do—truly this is a job for spray paint or a paint sprayer—I noticed the white peeking through the rails. Aaargh!
I used a teeny artist’s paint brush to get inside every. single. hole.
But Saturday morning, it was as done as it was gonna get. I hauled it to the focus group, where I gave my opinion (as opposed to all those times when I keep it to myself—ha) and met some lovely Atlanta designers and bloggers.
And here is the chair now.
I liked the little greek key detail on chair. I debated painting it white, but I’m glad I didn’t.
Thanks to Kristen for inviting me to take part in the group. I am already thinking of what to do with my generous paint stash! Kristen writes the MyColor Paints blog, and posts lots of great project ideas there. You can see all the well-curated color choices in the MyColor line here and you can find them at Lowe’s.
I shot these pictures in our hallway! See the full hallway tour here. And read the backstory of our tree stump table here.

LOVE it.

Thanks so much, Rachel! I just linked up!
Such a great transformation. Five dollar chair turned into a $15o dollar chair, at least. Love that you went with that green piping. Now I seriously got to get on some piping. I’m inspired.
I just love it! I’ve been coveting gray painted furniture lately…and I like how the paint really brings out the Greek key detail. Nice job!
Thanks so much, Heather!
GREAT makeover. Love the colour and the cushion. And it’s a tad bit funny what you went through. Yup, I’ve been there too!
