I made a pillow!
My last sewing class was last night. And holy cow! It’s a pillow, bitches!
And not just a lame, sew two pieces of fabric together pillow—although that would have been a pretty amazing feat 4 weeks ago—but a pillow with a ZIPPER and PIPING.
That’s right.
See, piping!
And a zipper hidden behind the flap.
I gotta say, if you live in Atlanta and want to learn how to use a freaking sewing machine I highly recommend the classes at Whipstitch. They aren’t cheap, but I loved our rad teacher Theresa and I learned so much over 4 weeks. Things I never would have figured out with online tutorials alone. But, I’m also a class person. I like doing things in a group and with someone to answer my questions, fix my problems, tell me I’m pretty, etc.
Here’s the class with our finished pillow cases.
And some close ups of the fab creations.
Another thing I dorkily liked was the Knitting Circle aspect of things. Chatting, gossipping, talking about reality TV and 50 Shades of Grey. (Haven’t read it. Yet.)
So that was sewing class! I’m already thinking of what to take next.

Your pillow looks great! Which class did you take there–the one for beginners?
Thank you! Yep, I took introduction to sewing. It was a great class!
The pillow does look great. And you are pretty. Good job!
Woot!! LOVE these–and that you got a group photo. This rocks, can’t wait to see what you’ll sew next! Thanks for all the nice words–we heart you, too.
That is awesome! I would love to know how to do piping. Just bought myself a “real” machine last weekend so I could finally learn how to make some “real” stuff. Suddenly I feel a need for a pillow of my own…
Impressive! You will have such fun making pillows!
Your pillow was my favorite, and I am not prejudice! Loved the owl fabric too.
Awesome pillow and I’m jealous of your new knowledge! Wish I had a Whipstitch in New Orleans!
I’ve mastered zippers pretty well, but haven’t delved into piping – great job! We have a studio in Seattle called assemble that has awesome sewing classes. Highly recommend
Love it! And it sounds like the class was great. I’ve been wanting to take an intro sewing class at the community college where I work, but I wonder if it will be “intro” enough for me.
The last time I did anything with a sewing machine was 8th grade … and the teacher threaded the bobbin and all the other non-intuitive stuff, so I learned nothing other than how to push fabric in a straight line and keep my foot on the pedal.
Isn’t it exciting! I took sewing classes about 8 years ago…and I was definitely a sewing fool for a while. Never got to the zipper gig but I should have since I like to change out my pillows so often!
