Brass Junkie

This post wasn’t intended to be a Beastie Boys tribute, but I listened to License to Ill while going through bills yesterday and it brought back lots of good college memories. I can almost smell the dorm rooms.

Anyway, this weekend I hit up a few thrift stores/flea markets in search of an old brass vessel for my new maiden hair fern I’d bought the previous weekend at the Inman Park Festival.

Here’s what I came home with:

The big pot on the left is pretty much exactly what I set out to find. Which, on a thrifting trip, almost never happens. You never know what you’re going to come across so you just open yourself up to the thrifting gods. Luckily they were looking out for me.

I had stopped at another flea market, the one where I’d found my brass parrot and my spindle table, and found an old brass champagne bucket. It was a similar shape to the one pictured above, but bigger and had a pedestal foot. I offered $10, the guy wouldn’t budge from $14.50, so I left. I decided to take a last minute swing by Goodwill and found the big pot I’d been looking for for 5 bucks!

It looks coppery in this photo, but it’s tarnished brass. I picked up the bust for $11 at Consignment Furniture Depot. She doesn’t have a home just yet, but I liked her too much to pass her by.

I also paid my first visit to¬†My Favorite Place, which for the record, is not. TONS of crapola, poorly organized. The few things that I thought were cool were priced way too high. And then I saw the small brass pot for $3. Sold! I love the bead detail and there’s also a wee keyhole in it. You can see it at 12:00 in the photo below.

I picked up some plants at Lowe’s and threw the last of the craggy succulents they had into my cart.

And then, on a whim, I DIYed my own lamp terrarium.

Clearly, it was very difficult.

Not sure if I love it, but it’s a fun change-up.

They don’t have this exact lamp at CB2 anymore, but this is a close copy.

Any good thrifting finds in your world lately?

Had I not known you had set out looking for a copper pot, I may have thought the Beastie reference was a bit forced. Nice work. And RIP MCA.

Such a fun idea; love succulents! How do you keep yours alive? Do you water or use a spray bottle?

How in the heck did you get that in there?? It looks great though, I think it’s gorgeous!

Goodwill prices seem to have gone up around here (Portland), but I still get better prices there than I do in any for-profit thrift stores. Reading I was thinking that I would never have walked away from the pot over $4. Next time I will! I’m working on not getting things unless they’re just right, and that needs to include the price. Really like your pots, and I have no idea how you got that plant in that lamp! And just posted about our latest thrift store find–a 70s light. (I just know the 70s are going to be cool again soon. Jumping on that stuff now :-)

I love that I’m David Copperfield! No, the base of the lamp is wide open. I just set the lamp on top of it!

As for watering, I just dribble water on them every now and then when they’re really dry. I am not the most successful succulent owner so please take my advice with a grain of salt!

OMG Molly. That lamp is the most stylish dose of genius I’ve seen in a long time. So unexpected. Cheers to you girl!

OK…now I might have to hurt you….I LOVE “My Favorite Place”! But it is a bit like TJ Maxx…..it takes time to get through the place. And…you have to go often. The good stuff goes quick :)
Is it junky….yes…but there are gems in there for sure.
I love your treasures…and the brass pot is wonderful! Yes…GW has gotten outrageous!
