Summer Beer

May 23, 2012
by thenestinggame

I admit, AT TIMES, I am somewhat prone to exaggeration. But not this time.

All I’m saying is, this post will change your life.

Summer Beer.

“But I don’t like beer.”

You will like this.

This somewhat sweet, totally refreshing seasonal beverage gets the party started. In fact, I kind of get cranky in festive summer occasions if I don’t have a glass at my disposal. Luckily, it’s super simple to throw together.

You will need:

4 cold light beers (I usually go the Miller Lite or Bud Light route.)

1 can of frozen pink lemonade concentrate (Pink is a crucial ingredient. Regular lemonade is not the same.)

1 empty lemonade can’s worth of vodka (We had Tito’s on hand, but I typically use Smirnoff. Meaning, it doesn’t have to be top shelf.)

Pour the lemonade concentrate into the pitcher, then fill the empty lemonade can with vodka. Sometimes I do as little as half a can. Sometimes three-quarters. Sometimes, all the way.

Pop open your cold beers.

Then pour them into the pitcher. Flick out some of the extra foam and stir.

Now, you might be asking, “What if I have a big party? Can I make summer beer in larger batches?”

Excellent question. The answer is, “absolutely!” I’ve made it with as much as a 12-pack before, but I must say, the fresher it is, the better. So, if you know can refresh a pitcher, or even a double batch, without too much trouble, then I would recommend it. And I guarantee someone is going to ask you how you make it, so making the refill pitcher can actually turn into a nice demo opportunity.

I have also found that it’s best to add ice to the individual glasses rather than to the pitcher itself.

I must give a shout out to Bill (whose last name I forgot) from the 2000 Theatre Memphis cast of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat for introducing me to this wonderful concoction. It has added life to countless parties that happened to fall between Memorial Day and Labor Day.

A word of warning: it goes down easy.

Summer Beer is best served on a beach. Or by a pool. Or on a boat. Or on a patio beneath the shade trees. Or smuggled into a karaoke bar.

Now you are ready for Memorial Day.

And so am I, because I am heading to Mexico with some of my besties! I will return next week. Enjoy your weekends and let me know if you make some Summer Beer!

.

UPDATED: There’s a second version of Summer Beer you should try: Mexican Summer Beer. Es bueno.

What a coincidence that Kerri and David had a huge batch at their Saturday pool party/BBQ!

This sounds amazing and just the thing for a party we are having later in the summer! However, living in the UK, I have never heard of pink lemonade concentrate – do any of your UK readers know if anyone does it?

I make this all the time and call them beer-ritas. I never use pink lemonade though, I use limeade instead. It’s still wonderful but I understand. :)

I had a very similar drink in Mexico that the bartender called ‘el toro’ and it turned out to be the same type of lemonade-beer drink but instead of vodka they used rum.

I was wondering if it’d be good with Tequila, but I’m scared to try it. Rum would definitely work though. All of these things with beer and sun are dangerously delicious.

Two things to add: 1. Tito’s is inexpensive vodka, but I consider it top self. May as well use it over the Smirnoff. 2. I love anything Mexican. So, for a fiesta, I recommend lime aid, Tito’s and four Tecaté. However, Molly is not as big a fan of this variation.

This looks dangerous. And fun. (Oh, they so often go together, don’t they?) Will try this with gluten-free beer and let you know how it goes.

This is too funny! When I studied abroad in finland we drank tons of this stuff, but I always thought it was a weird finnish thing that they made up. Now I feel validated that I can drink it again, woohoO!

We used to drink this in college – only we called it Dirty Mop Bucket Water. Not sure if it’s because we used limeade, but our never turned out pretty like this! A night never ended right after drinking a bucket….

I’ve never seen a summer beer look so swanky, but I can definitely attest that this stuff rocks. You will not know how you lived through hot Atlanta/Memphis/Texas summers without it.

I love this stuff! We usually put it in the freezer for a couple of hours. It is amazing as a slush!

I made this for my weekend barbecue, and it was a hit! Thanks for sharing the recipe. (And I too used to call these “Hop, Skip, and Go Nakeds” in my younger days, haha!)

I would hate beer too if I drank Miller Lite. I’d rather go sober or drink water.

Love the sound of this recipe, and I just went to the store and got the pink lemonade! We plan to go boating on Sat. and I am making a pitcher of this to take with us! Btw- the only vodka we buy is Tito’s!!! It is excellent and very inexpensive- we feel it is better than Grey Goose! I also love your blog! Thanks!

We drank this in college, but we used 12 beers, 1 whole fifth of vodka, and several scoops of pink lemonade mix and made it in a big gatorade cooler. We called them “Pink Panty Droppers” and if you aren’t careful, you’ll be on your butt before you even realize you’re drinking alcohol. SO good though.

  20. April 13, 2013 3:31 pm

The vodka certainly doesn’t need t be “top shelf.” In the USA, by law, vodka can only contain distilled water and ethanol. Any flavor such as orange or anything else is artificial and added just before bottling. There is no “top shelf” vodka.

Otherwise, the drink sounds interesting. I may try it/

We call this a “Pink panty dropper” it’s such a crowd pleaser. I like to make in an igloo with 18pack of bud light, 4 cans of minute maid raspberry lemonade and 2 bottles of raspberry Smirnoff…. Delish!!!!

  24. April 22, 2013 7:01 am

we have made this the same way Michelle has. With the raspberry lemonade and the rasberry vodka. We will be doing this over the Memorial Day weekend, as we have a back yard party, every year.

wonder what would happen if you did not drink it all at one time and stored it in the refrigerator?

Unfortunately it does not hold up very well. The beer loses its carbonation and it gets kind of syrupy.

We used to make a similar dink in college but we would add ice and blend it into a slushy drink. We also called it “getcha laid lemonade” the problem is it is sooo darn tasty you forget you are drinking vodka and its hard to stop

We call this PORCH CRAWL. We make huge batches for block parties/tailgates/big parties. 30 pack of Natty Light, 1 bottle of any vodka, 6 cans frozen pink lemonade concentrate. Mix in a big gatorade cooler. This drink is so dangerous :) I HATE beer and i LOVE this stuff, it’s so light and smooth, you drink it quickly then BAM you’re crawling because walking doesn’t work anymore! I have to pace myself with these!
